Recycling Prom Night

It's that time of year when girls all over are searching for that perfect dress. My teen's junior prom is coming up soon and she is also attending her boyfriend's senior prom. This past weekend she went dress hunting at the mall with some of her girlfriends. After four hours of trying on dress after dress - the 'perfect' one was over $200!!! And she still needed another! Needless to say - she needed a mommy intervention.... Luckily, my teenager is pretty cool and was excited about the idea of doing dress hunting in our local consignment shop. I would have taken her back to the mall for less expensive options if she didn't find anything but to me there is something so fun about finding a one-of-a-kind dress that can be used again. It's not even all about the cost... it just seems like such a waste. Let's face it - almost all of those dresses will likely only be worn that one night.... This is the ultimate recycling.

We were so excited to have SO many dresses to choose from! I won't tell which ones she picked now... but she was able to find two beautiful dresses for HALF the price of the one she found at the mall.

And she will most definitely be the only girl at her dance wearing that dress each night.
And the hunting was fun!
We treated ourselves to Indian food with half our 'saved' money afterwards.

The best thing is that we can bring these dresses BACK again next year and consign them to make back some of the money we spent, leaving a beautiful dress there for another girl going to prom.

What a wonderful and fun lesson for her too. How nice that she is so cool with it!

For my senior prom, I knew I didn't want to buy an expensive dress from the mall so I hit up our local thrift store. I was lucky to find a designer gown, in great condition, that fit perfectly for only $8! It was a great victory for me and I looked smashing, if I say so myself.
