Fingerplay for Earth Day

Oak Trees Fingerplay

This is an acorn so smooth and so brown,
(Make small circle with fingers)

Which from a great oak tree came rattling down.
(tap fingers on desk or table)

Now it is hiding deep down in the grass,
(hide head into hands)

Waiting for ice-time and snow-time to pass.
Here are some baby oaks trying to grow,
(raise head up – point pointers up straight)

Here are young saplings all placed in a row,
(raise other fingers and arms up straight)

These are tall oak trees in red leaves and brown,
(stand up straight and extend arms like tree)

Hear how their acorns come rattling down.
(sit down and tap fingers briskly on desk or table)

For Francie and Her Children

Francie used my guides with her three small, beautiful children. When I was told about her passing today, I couldnt believe it was the same woman that I corresponded with over the last two years. She strived so hard to create a loving and peaceful home for her babies, her sweet little innocent babies... God help them and keep them with you.

Purpose

"The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reasons to Believe

Yesterday we took a ride up to Kent Falls... Kent is one of my favorite places to be. The natural Falls are amazing and the town itself has so many sweet shops and places to see.

Being in nature is proof enough to me that our world was created with such extreme detail and design. It is a work of art coming from pure love. Truly amazing. And when I take the time to really absorb it all and to BE a part of it, rather than rushing past it... that is when I feel God inside of me the most.

Faith...

After the Falls, we stopped at an old machinery museum... we didn't go inside but spent time outside on the train ...the girls loved it.

And daddy did too.

Natural Easter Egg Dyeing

This past week, we did natural Easter Egg Dyeing with the children. It was amazing! We used cherries (with juice), tumeric and spinach!

First we put our eggs into individual pots and added the 'dye'....(don't worry! the stove was OFF at this point!)

Wow LOTS of tumeric!
Spinach!
Then we added vinegar and we were supposed to add alum but I didn't have any so we just took our chances.... it still worked wonderfully (except I did have to cheat and add a little drop or two of green food coloring to the spinach as it didn't get very green)
TA DA!!!!! Safe, naturally dyed eggs! How pretty they are!

The children were so mesmerized LOL

I highly recommend this sweet little book for Easter time for Christian families... The Parable of the Lily...

Then of course we had to have our hard boiled eggs for snack! The children each picked which color they wanted... and had to work to get their snack! This was a great fine motor activity - we also learned about colors and talked about which was which.
We made up a little rhyme to go along with the process:
Tap, Tap, Tap with the spoon to our Eggs...
Tap, Tap, Tap
Tap, Tap, Tap
Crack, Crack, Crack goes the shell on our Eggs
Crack, Crack, Crack
Crack, Crack, Crack
Peel, peel peel off the shell of our Eggs
Peel, Peel, Peel
Peel, Peel, Peel
AND NOW WE EAT!!!!

Book Progress...

Guess I may be in an artsy flow.... Nice :)

Here's my next layout in my Altered Book. Oddly, I noticed I'm working back to front. Not unlike me at all.

Palm Weavings

Today is Holy Thursday. This day commemorates the last supper Jesus had with his Apostles. Being Catholic, this day is especially important to our family. We have been talking about Jesus and his life this Holy Week. On Palm Sunday, we received our palms at Mass and worked on making crosses and mats as described in my April Childcare Guide. Although the Little Acorn guides are not religiously oriented, they do incorporate many of the Christian holidays, festivals and traditions that I find so beautiful as the seasons weave in and out throughout the year.
