Have you ever noticed that when we spend time outdoors our bodies feel a sense of peace and calm? This may be best described as a feeling of ‘oneness’ with the environment. If you have ever had the opportunity to walk into a playroom filled with natural toys, such as a Waldorf Kindergarten or a Natural Childcare setting, you would notice those same feelings resonate inside of you. The peace and calmness that comes over you is a completely different experience than you would feel if you walked into a traditional classroom or daycare center – just as taking a walk in the woods would make you feel differently than taking a walk in the mall.
Human Beings are drawn to nature and natural materials. It is who we are. We are nature. Holding something beautiful that is made from the earth has tremendous positive psychological effects on both adults and children. Surrounding children with nature does amazing things for their bodies and souls.
Natural materials teach children correctly about the world around them. When a child picks up a rock that is made of plastic, it feels light and weightless. In nature, rocks are heavy and solid.
Toys that do not require batteries invite open-ended play. This type of play sparks children’s creativity and requires them to finish the story on their own. Many electronic toys have a predetermined ending – leaving little room for imagination causing the child to lose interest quickly.
Loud toys can over-stimulate children – blinking lights, loud sound and so much going on is a lot for a small child to take in.
There is evidence that some plastics may be dangerous to our health. Some components that are added to PVC have been linked to cancer and other serious ailments. Because children are often putting items in their mouth and chewing toys, this can be a concern to many parents. “A recent Greenpeace study revealed that PVC softeners known as phthalates have been found to cause liver and kidney damage and disrupt hormonal systems in children (see "Teething Toxins," In Brief, March/April 1998). In response, several European nations have banned PVC toys altogether. U.S. toy distributors are still debating the issue.”
Lastly, natural toys are better for the environment. Plastic can sit in landfills for hundreds of years and does not break down very quickly.

I love how natural toys encourage the use of the child's imagination. Toys with batteries and blinking lights and toys that are fasioned after TV charaters don't inspire imaginative play. Soon the child becomes bored with them.
